Understanding Deworming Schedules for Sheep & Goats

Gastrointestinal parasites remain one of the biggest productivity drains on sheep and goat flocks, but over-reliance on any single dewormer accelerates resistance. A thoughtful deworming programme balances effective control with long-term sustainability.

Time treatments strategically: deworming at key points — pre-breeding, post-kidding/lambing and at the start of the rainy season — targets parasites when they are most likely to affect flock performance.

Rotate anthelmintic classes: using different drug classes across seasons, rather than the same product every time, slows the development of resistant parasite populations.

Don't treat blind: where possible, use body condition scoring or faecal egg counts to identify which animals actually need treatment, rather than deworming the entire flock every time.

Speak with your local Animalia Paharmavet representative to design a deworming calendar suited to your flock size and grazing conditions.
